Perhaps This Feels Familiar

Perhaps you've spent years wondering why everyday life seems to require so much more effort than it appears to for other people.

You may be exhausted from constantly adapting, masking or trying to keep up with expectations that never quite seem to fit. Some days you can achieve remarkable things; on others, even the simplest tasks feel impossible to begin. You know what needs doing, yet something seems to stand in the way of getting started.

Perhaps you've recently discovered you're autistic, ADHD or AuDHD, and you're beginning to understand your life through a different lens. Experiences that once felt confusing may finally be making sense. Alongside that understanding, there may also be uncertainty, grief or a sense of wondering what comes next.

You may have tried planners, routines, self-help books or productivity systems that worked for a while before quietly falling away. The problem was never a lack of motivation. More often, those approaches simply weren't designed with your neurotype in mind.

At The ASC-ADHD Coach, I believe lasting change begins with understanding rather than self-criticism. Through the Flourishing with AuDHD Framework™, we'll explore how your brain works, recognise your strengths, support the areas that feel challenging, and build a life that feels more sustainable, authentic and meaningful.

There is another way.

For many autistic, ADHD and AuDHD adults, life has been shaped by years of adapting to environments, expectations and advice that were never designed with their neurotype in mind. Over time, it can become difficult to separate who you truly are from the strategies you've developed simply to get through each day.

My coaching begins from a different perspective.

Rather than asking how you can fit yourself into someone else's idea of success, we begin by understanding how your brain works, what supports your wellbeing, and what flourishing genuinely looks like for you.

This philosophy sits at the heart of the Flourishing with AuDHD Framework™—an evidence-informed coaching framework that brings together coaching psychology, positive psychology, neurodiversity-affirming practice and lived experience to help you move beyond simply coping and towards building a life that feels sustainable, meaningful and authentically yours.

What is Co-occurring Autism and ADHD (AuDHD)?

Co-occurring autism and ADHD, often referred to as AuDHD, describes individuals who experience the characteristics of both Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This may include people who have received formal diagnoses of both conditions, as well as those who identify with both autistic and ADHD experiences following careful self-reflection and exploration.

Many adults encounter significant barriers to obtaining a formal assessment, including long waiting lists, financial constraints, geographical limitations or historical differences in diagnostic practice. Self-identification can therefore represent an important step in understanding oneself and seeking appropriate support.

Although autism and ADHD are distinct neurodevelopmental conditions, research has shown that they frequently occur together. AuDHD is not simply autism with ADHD added on, nor ADHD with autism added on. Rather, it represents a unique neurodevelopmental profile in which the characteristics of both conditions interact in complex and highly individual ways.

These interactions influence how a person thinks, processes information, regulates emotions, experiences the sensory world, manages attention and executive functioning, develops relationships, learns, works and navigates everyday life. Every AuDHDer has their own pattern of strengths, challenges, preferences and support needs. No two individuals will experience AuDHD in exactly the same way.

What Can AuDHD Mean for the Individual?

Living with both autistic and ADHD characteristics can create a unique pattern of experiences that are often misunderstood by others—and sometimes by the individual themselves. Many AuDHDers describe feeling as though different aspects of their neurodivergence pull them in different directions.

For example, someone may value routine and predictability while also craving novelty, spontaneity and stimulation. They may enjoy connecting with others while becoming overwhelmed by the social, sensory or emotional demands that accompany it. They may have deep interests and exceptional ideas while finding it difficult to organise, prioritise or sustain attention on everyday tasks. These experiences are not contradictions; they reflect the complex interaction between two neurodevelopmental conditions.

Many AuDHD adults spend years sensing that they are different without understanding why. Some autistic characteristics may mask ADHD traits, while ADHD traits may obscure autistic characteristics, making recognition and diagnosis more complex. As a result, many people do not discover they are AuDHD until adulthood, while others recognise themselves through learning about autism and ADHD and are still waiting for, unable to access, or have chosen not to pursue a formal assessment.

Without an understanding of their neurodivergence, many AuDHD adults develop ways of coping that require considerable effort. They may spend years masking, compensating, overworking, people-pleasing or constantly adapting to meet expectations that do not align with how their brain naturally functions. Over time, this can contribute to chronic stress, exhaustion, burnout, reduced self-confidence and a feeling of being disconnected from their authentic self.

Alongside these challenges, AuDHD is also associated with many strengths. Many AuDHDers demonstrate creativity, curiosity, empathy, innovative thinking, deep pattern recognition, strong problem-solving abilities, passionate interests and a capacity to see possibilities that others may overlook. These qualities often flourish when individuals are supported in environments that recognise and value neurodiversity.

Throughout the Flourishing with AuDHD programme, the term AuDHDer is used inclusively to refer to adults who are formally diagnosed, self-identify following thoughtful exploration, or are currently questioning whether they may be autistic, ADHD or AuDHD. Whatever stage of your journey you are on, the aim is to provide evidence-informed education, practical strategies and compassionate support to help you understand yourself more fully and build a life that reflects your unique strengths, needs and values.

What is Flourishing?

Flourishing is the ongoing process of living a life that is healthy, meaningful and personally fulfilling. It involves more than simply coping with life's challenges or reducing distress. Flourishing reflects a state of wellbeing in which people are able to use their strengths, pursue what matters to them, build supportive relationships, adapt to change and continue growing throughout life.

Flourishing does not mean feeling happy all the time or living without difficulty. Every person experiences periods of stress, loss and uncertainty. Instead, flourishing is about having the resources, self-understanding and resilience to navigate these experiences while remaining connected to a sense of purpose, hope and possibility.

As a dynamic process rather than a fixed destination, flourishing changes across different stages of life. It develops through learning, self-reflection, supportive environments and opportunities to live in ways that are consistent with one's values and authentic identity.

What Does Flourishing Look Like for an AuDHDer?

For an autistic and ADHD (AuDHD) adult, flourishing is not measured by how successfully they imitate neurotypical expectations. It is reflected in building a life that works with their neurodivergent way of thinking, feeling and experiencing the world.

Flourishing begins with understanding and accepting one's neurodivergence. As self-understanding grows, many people become better able to recognise their strengths, understand their challenges without self-blame, and make choices that support their wellbeing rather than constantly adapting to meet external expectations.

For an AuDHDer, flourishing may include:

  • Feeling safe to be authentic without constantly masking.

  • Understanding personal sensory, emotional and cognitive needs.

  • Having routines and environments that support rather than overwhelm.

  • Developing practical strategies that work with fluctuating attention, energy and executive functioning.

  • Building relationships where acceptance, trust and mutual understanding are present.

  • Experiencing a sense of meaning through work, interests, creativity or contribution.

  • Recognising and valuing strengths alongside challenges.

  • Practising self-compassion during periods of burnout, overwhelm or reduced capacity.

  • Feeling empowered to advocate for personal needs and boundaries.

  • Living in a way that reflects personal values rather than external expectations.

Flourishing does not require perfection, constant productivity or the absence of struggle. There will be times when energy is limited, burnout occurs or life feels difficult. These experiences do not mean someone has stopped flourishing. Instead, flourishing includes responding to these periods with understanding, flexibility and compassion, while continuing to build a life that feels sustainable, meaningful and true to who they are.

Ultimately, flourishing for an AuDHDer means having the freedom, knowledge and confidence to create a life in which their neurodivergence is understood, supported and valued. It is about moving beyond survival and towards a life that feels authentic, fulfilling and uniquely their own.

"I had coaching sessions with Danielle after I had my ADHD diagnosis in the lead up to my autism diagnosis. She helped me to map my ADHD and autism related traits and strengths in Venn diagrams, plan how to handle certain situations, sort through my approach to managing my traits, start to process what unmasking might look like and to prepare for my autism assessment and process the diagnosis. Danielle was warm, affirming, non-pretentious, easy to talk to and quick to understand my experience and validate it. Working with Danielle helped me feel a lot less anxious and much more in control, I plan to go back to her for coaching periodically in future and I would definitely recommend working with her, particularly for those who may have both autism and ADHD or those struggling with internalised ableism or imposter syndrome (including imposter syndrome about whether you are neurodivergent)."

"Thank you for all your help Danielle! I feel very equipped for the future, thanks to your supportive, compassionate guidance. It has been a pleasure working with you and I can't thank you enough"
